Lena C. Emery has cultivated a nuanced aesthetic that draws upon her itinerant background. Traveling the world extensively from a young age and moving between different countries in Europe and Asia has gifted the German artist a generous familiarity with a diversity of cultures. Her work is both delicate as well as probing. Often permeated with Japanese influences, stemming from her deep appreciation for Japanese philosophies, her images are acutely poetic.
Emery’s photographs have been published by Gestalten, Rizzoli and Self Publish Be Happy as well as exhibited at Asama International Photo Festival in Japan, Parasol Unit Foundation for Contemporary Art and Annenberg Space of Photography. Emery was nominated for the FOAM Paul Huf Award 2015 and was selected amongst UK Winners by the Magenta Foundation within the Flash Forward Emerging Photographers 2016 Award.
Emery’s first monograph Rie was selected as one of the most engaging & exciting projects in photography by the British Journal of Photography and featured on their January 2017 cover. The book opened a distinctly feminine dialogue on the act of revealing, without allowing an inner or outer surveyor to be present.
Her second book Yuka & The Forest introduces us to the chinju no mori, the sacred forest. We are reminded that cultures like that of Japan, which are deeply embedded in nature, have been able to perserve much of their natural habitat by having fostered an interconnected value system. We embark on a journey of reflection that leads us through a remote village high into the midst of a vast landscape, prompting us to contemplate nature’s profound serenity and as the last pages fall also of its demise at the hand of our own.
Emery has created thoughtfully curated imagery for fashion brands such as Dior, Stella McCartney, Helmut Lang, Hermes, Lemaire and Tiffany. Emery’s editorial commissions include The Gentlewoman, M Le Magazine du Monde, Purple, Pop, British Vogue, WSJ Magazine and System.
As director Emery has created films for Nowness, COS, Everlane and various charities.
