Charity Exhibition Series

Exhibited in part at Parasol Unit: Foundation for Contemporary Art, London 2017

‘An Introverted State of Mind: To be only partially visible in a largely inscrutable universe’ discusses and tries to bring about awareness for the ongoing mental health crisis termed Hikikimori. Hikikimori refers to reclusive adolescents or adults who withdraw from social life, often seeking extreme degrees of isolation and confinement. They are beset by internal conflict between the self that cannot go out into the world and the self that constantly condemns their failure to do so. The psychological condition which often results in the person staying in their houses for months on end has become a mental health crisis in Japan. Over half a million of men and women between the ages of 15-39 have chosen to isolate themselves in this way by pulling inward, being reclusive and not wanting any contact with the outside world.

The images were specifically created for a charity exhibition at Parasol Unit in collaboration with working with marginalised groups of society.
