INSTALLATION: Lost Bodies/ Future Relics, 2023

Exhibited at FRIEZE No9 Cork Street Gallery, London.

Future Relics (Granite, sediment and lime) To mimic the accumulations of moraines – rock debris, sediment, and soil carried, pushed, or deposited by glaciers as they move and melt – Emery fuses granite remnants with a special lime material, which has the remarkable ability to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere as it hardens. Once fully set, the fused lime remains chemically stable allowing the objects to continuously sequester carbon dioxide over time, potentially for decades or even centuries.

Lost Bodies (Honed glacial boulders and wood)

Lost Bodies serves as a direct symbol of glacial-borne erratics left behind in the aftermath of glacial retreat. Derived from the Latin word “errare”, meaning “to wander”, erratics are carried over vast distances by shifting ice, differing in composition from the native rock of the areas in which they come to rest. Drawing parallels to the displacement of individuals and communities in the wake of ecological upheaval, Lost Bodies emphasises the inseparable threads of human and environmental narratives amidst the throes of a shifting climate. “The elemental particles composing our very being once danced amidst these ancient landscapes and if they disappear, part of us does too.” Lena C. Emery
